Diaspora Wellhouse presents the 11th edition of ‘Power of the Name’ in Almere

An in-depth program on naming, identity, and shared heritage Almere, April 26, 2026 –

On Sunday, April 26, Diaspora Wellhouse is organizing the 11th edition of the Power of the Name awareness program at Theater & Cultural Center De Schoor – De Glasbak in Almere.

This public event focuses on the meaning of naming, the lasting impact of colonial history, and the power of reclaiming identity. Following previous successful editions in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Arnhem, Utrecht, The Hague, and Tilburg, among others, Diaspora Wellhouse is now bringing this unique program to Almere.

Over Power of the Name

Power of the Name explores the deeper layers of naming and naming traditions. The program connects generations and communities and shows how names are intertwined with colonial history, migration, rituals, family stories, and cultural continuity.

The gathering offers context, reflection, and personal stories about how names influence identity, self-image, and community today.

Keynote: Denie Kasan – Genealogy, archives and family history

Denie Kasan is the keynote speaker at this edition . As an expert in genealogy, family and genealogical research, and archival sources regarding the colonial past, he helps descendants reconstruct their family history.

Using interactive examples, he shows visitors how they can conduct research themselves in archives and databases.

Panel discussion with leading voices

Following the keynote, an in-depth panel discussion will take place with:

● Chief Nana Piaw – Dennis Topin

Asante Chief of Bosomtwe (Ghana), social entrepreneur and changemaker.

He uses his leadership to strengthen communities and stimulate development, both in Ghana and in the Netherlands.

● Ashaki Leito

Ashaki works as an entrepreneur on the empowerment of primarily Black youth. She develops empowerment programs in which identity, self-image, and African history take center stage. Ashaki also gives various workshops on themes such as anti-Black racism, self-love, and the history and politics of ‘Black’.

hair’. Additionally, Ashaki is a tour guide for Black Heritage Tours and gives tours through the canals of Amsterdam, covering the history of slavery and colonialism linked to Amsterdam.

Film screening: heritage, memory and tourism

The program continues with the screening of the documentary:

‘The Embodied Absence of the Past: Tourism’s Intersection with Slavery and Colonial Heritage Memories in the Ghana–Suriname–Netherlands Triangle’.

This film by Dr. Emmanuel Akwasi Adu-Ampong (WUR & University of Johannesburg) is based on a four-year international research project.

By popular demand, this documentary has been included in the program one last time, giving visitors who missed it previously – or who wish to experience it again – the chance to see this important work.

The film explores how slavery and colonial heritage continue to influence contemporary memory culture and tourism. It reveals how places, stories, and collective silence converge, and how the past remains physically and emotionally present as well.

Following this, an open discussion will be held with Dr. Adu-Ampong, guided by the moderator.

Name change, roots journeys and recovery

Diaspora Wellhouse Founders Irene Agyeman Hin and Sabrina Starke are once again sharing their expertise on the name change process via the national Justis scheme (possible since July 1, 2024).

In addition, they discuss how roots and heritage journeys contribute to awareness, identity strengthening, healing, and transformation.

The afternoon is hosted by socio-cultural producer and moderator Mahutin Awunou and concludes with a special performance by artist Sydney Lowell .

A program with impact

Since July 1, 2024, it has been possible in the Netherlands to change colonial surnames via Justis. This public meeting offers in-depth understanding, context, and human stories regarding this current societal issue.

Een verdiepend programma over naamgeving, identiteit en gedeeld erfgoed Almere, 26 april 2026 –

Op zondag 26 april organiseert Diaspora Wellhouse de 11e editie van het bewustwordingsprogramma Power of the Name in Theater & Cultureel Centrum De Schoor – De Glasbak in Almere.

Deze publieksbijeenkomst staat in het teken van de betekenis van naamgeving, de doorwerking van koloniale geschiedenis en de kracht van het herclaimen van identiteit. Na eerdere succesvolle edities in onder meer Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Arnhem, Utrecht, Den Haag en Tilburg, brengt Diaspora Wellhouse dit unieke programma nu naar Almere.

Over Power of the Name

Power of the Name onderzoekt de diepere lagen van naamgeving en naamtradities. Het programma verbindt generaties en gemeenschappen en laat zien hoe namen verweven zijn met koloniale geschiedenis, migratie, rituelen, familieverhalen en culturele continuïteit.

De bijeenkomst biedt context, reflectie en persoonlijke verhalen over hoe namen vandaag de dag invloed hebben op identiteit, zelfbeeld en gemeenschap.

Tijdens deze editie is Denie Kasan keynote spreker. Als expert in genealogie, familie- en stamboomonderzoek en archiefbronnen rond het koloniaal verleden, helpt hij nazaten hun familiegeschiedenis te reconstrueren.

Met interactieve voorbeelden laat hij bezoekers zien hoe zij zelf onderzoek kunnen doen in archieven en databanken.

Panelgesprek met toonaangevende stemmen

Na de keynote volgt een verdiepend panelgesprek met:

Hij zet zijn leiderschap in om gemeenschappen te versterken en ontwikkeling te stimuleren, zowel in Ghana als in Nederland.

●       Ashaki Leito

Ashaki werkt als ondernemer aan de empowerment van voornamelijk zwarte jongeren. Zo ontwikkelt zij empowerment trajecten waarin identiteit, zelfbeeld en Afrikaanse geschiedenis centraal staan. Tevens geeft Ashaki diverse workshops met thema’s zoals anti-zwart racisme, zelfliefde, geschiedenis en politiek van ‘Black

hair’. Daarnaast is Ashaki tourguide voor de Black Heritage Tours en geeft zij tours door de grachten van Amsterdam, over de geschiedenis van slavernij en kolonialisme, gelinkt aan Amsterdam.

Filmscreening: erfgoed, herinnering en toerisme

Het programma vervolgt met de vertoning van de documentaire:

‘The Embodied Absence of the Past: Tourism’s Intersection with Slavery and Colonial Heritage Memories in the Ghana–Suriname–Netherlands Triangle’.

Deze film van Dr. Emmanuel Akwasi Adu-Ampong (WUR & University of Johannesburg) is gebaseerd op een vierjarig internationaal onderzoeksproject.

Op veler verzoek is deze documentaire nog één keer opgenomen in het programma, zodat bezoekers die hem eerder hebben gemist – of juist opnieuw willen ervaren – alsnog de kans krijgen om dit belangrijke werk te zien.

De film onderzoekt hoe slavernij- en koloniaal erfgoed doorwerken in hedendaagse herinneringscultuur en toerisme. Het maakt zichtbaar hoe plekken, verhalen en collectieve stilte samenkomen, en hoe het verleden ook lichamelijk en emotioneel aanwezig blijft.

Aansluitend wordt een open gesprek met Dr. Adu-Ampong gevoerd, onder begeleiding van de moderator.

Naamswijziging, rootsreizen en herstel

Diaspora Wellhouse Founders Irene Agyeman Hin en Sabrina Starke delen opnieuw hun expertise over het proces van naamswijziging via de landelijke regeling van Justis (mogelijk sinds 1 juli 2024).

Daarnaast bespreken zij hoe roots- en erfgoedreizen bijdragen aan bewustwording, identiteitsversterking, heling en transformatie.

De middag wordt begeleid door sociaal-cultureel producer en moderator Mahutin Awunou en sluit af met een bijzondere performance van artiest Sydney Lowell.

Sinds 1 juli 2024 is het in Nederland mogelijk om koloniale achternamen te wijzigen via Justis. Deze openbare bijeenkomst biedt verdieping, context en menselijke verhalen bij dit actuele maatschappelijke thema.
