On Sunday, February 22, 2026, Diaspora Wellhouse will organize the ninth public meeting of the Power of the Name awareness program at the Laaktheater in The Hague. An afternoon that touches on who we are, where we come from, and what it means to consciously carry or reclaim your name—and with it, your history.
Power of the Name brings people from different generations and cultural backgrounds together around the deeper meaning of naming.
The program highlights how names are connected to colonial history, migration, rituals, family stories, and cultural continuity, and how they continue to influence identity, self-image, and community today.
After eight successful editions in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Arnhem, Utrecht, and other cities, this special gathering will now take place in The Hague, a city where many political histories converge.
Keynote: indigenous perspective on names, rituals, and community
The afternoon will open with a keynote speech by Henry Timisela, cultural entrepreneur, storyteller, and director of Museum Maluku. In his work, he connects Moluccan heritage, colonial history, and contemporary questions about identity and community.
From an indigenous perspective, he shows how stories, rituals, and naming traditions transcend generations and how they can contribute to awareness, resilience, and connectedness.
Panel discussion: names, archives, and personal transformation
This will be followed by an in-depth panel discussion with:
● Rudy van der Beek – community builder in The Hague, co-founder of Student Association Tribez and one of the driving forces behind the slavery monument in The Hague. He is committed to historical recognition, political awareness and involving young people in the conversation about identity and justice.
● Diana Ritfeld (Afia Acheampomaa) – headwrap coach, creative entrepreneur, and cultural connector. Her work focuses on self-expression, female empowerment, and cultural continuity. She will share her personal experience of receiving a new name in Ghana and reflect on the spiritual and cultural significance of naming.
Film screening: heritage, memory, and tourism
The first part of the program will be followed by a screening of the documentary
“The Embodied Absence of the Past: Tourism’s Intersection with Slavery and Colonial Heritage Memories in the Ghana–Suriname–Netherlands Triangle.”
This documentary was made by Dr. Emmanuel Akwasi Adu-Ampong, Associate Professor of Cultural Geography at Wageningen University & Research and Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg (School of Tourism and Hospitality). Adu-Ampong is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Tourism Planning & Development.
The film is based on a four-year international research project and explores how slavery and colonial heritage continue to influence contemporary memory culture and tourism within the Ghana–Suriname–Netherlands triangle.
Discussion and meeting
After the film screening, we invite the audience to an in-depth and open discussion with Dr. Emmanuel Akwasi Adu-Ampong
Irene Agyeman Hin and Sabrina Starke will discuss developments in the name change scheme for people with colonial surnames. They will also discuss how roots and heritage travel contribute to awareness, strengthening identity, healing, and transformation.
The afternoon will once again be hosted and moderated by socio-cultural producer and moderator Mahutin Awunou and will conclude with a musical performance by Afro Jazz & Soul artist Omara Lua
Power of the Name contributes to the restoration and strengthening of cultural identity, not only for the present but also for future generations. The program invites reflection, conversation, and connection and offers space to consider what a name really means in a broader historical and social context.
Since July 1, 2024, it has been possible in the Netherlands to change colonial surnames via Justis.

Op zondag 22 februari 2026 organiseert Diaspora Wellhouse in het Laaktheater in Den Haag de negende publieksbijeenkomst van het bewustwordingsprogramma Power of the Name. Een middag die raakt aan wie we zijn, waar we vandaan komen en wat het betekent om je naam – en daarmee je geschiedenis – bewust te dragen of te herclaimen.
Power of the Name brengt mensen van verschillende generaties en culturele achtergronden samen rondom de diepere betekenis van naamgeving.
Het programma belicht hoe namen verbonden zijn met koloniale geschiedenis, migratie, rituelen, familieverhalen en culturele continuïteit én hoe zij vandaag de dag doorwerken in identiteit, zelfbeeld en gemeenschap.
Na acht succesvolle edities in onder meer Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Arnhem en Utrecht, vindt deze bijzondere bijeenkomst nu plaats in Den Haag, een stad waar veel politieke geschiedenissen samenkomen.

Zij deelt haar persoonlijke ervaring van het ontvangen van een nieuwe naam in Ghana en reflecteert op de spirituele en culturele betekenis van naamgeving.
Filmscreening: erfgoed, herinnering en toerisme
Na het eerste deel van het programma volgt een vertoning van de documentaire

Irene Agyeman Hin en Sabrina Starke bespreken de ontwikkelingen van de regeling naamswijziging voor mensen met een koloniale achternaam. En hoe roots- en erfgoedreizen bijdragen aan bewustwording, versterken van identiteit, heling en transformatie.
De middag wordt wederom gedragen en begeleid door sociaal-cultureel producer en moderator Mahutin Awunou en sluit af met een muzikale performance van de Afro Jazz & Soul artiest Omara Lua
Power of the Name draagt bij aan het herstel en de versterking van culturele identiteit, niet alleen voor het heden maar ook voor volgende generaties. Het programma nodigt uit tot reflectie, gesprek en verbinding en biedt ruimte om stil te staan bij wat een naam werkelijk betekent in een bredere historische en maatschappelijke context.
Sinds 1 juli 2024 is het in Nederland mogelijk om koloniale achternamen te wijzigen via Justis.
