Join in at Wageningen! Threads of our Dutch Slavery Past (Draden van ons Nederlands Slavernijverleden) – Gelderland edition

Collaborate and contribute to a monumental tapestry about the Dutch Slavery past.

From Tuesday 27 May to the first week of July is the Cultural Geography Chair Group at Wageningen University and Research the host and coordinator for the making of a piece of the tapestry of the project  ‘Threads of our Dutch Slavery Past’. At various locations on campus and in the city centre, we will be working on pieces of this tapestry.

What does Threads of our Dutch Slavery Past entail?

The monumental tapestry is a sequel to the successful 2022 project of the Groninger Kerken Foundation, for which Ricardo Burgzorg provided the concept. Institutions in 11 provinces are collaborating on a project to achieve a common goal: the production of a total of 12 monumental tapestries. The project will run from 2024 to 2026. Each year, a number of provinces will display their tapestries in different locations. Now is the time for the making of the tapestry for Province Gelderland.

At several locations throughout the province, people are coming together to work on the tapestry based on the design by the artist Richard Kofi. The project partners include Wageningen University & Research, Museum Arnhem, CODA Apeldoorn, Paleis het Loo, Rozet Arnhem, Valkhof Museum, Het Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, De Cultuurfabriek and others.

How can you participate?

Come work on the monumental tapestry, designed by artist Richard Kofi, about the slavery past of the province of Gelderland. We will organise several work sessions at various locations on campus and at Thuis Wageningen in the city centre. At these locations you will work mainly on embroidery techniques under the guidance of a textile Coach or volunteer. Adults are welcome, as well as children and young people from 10 years old. During the work session hours, visitors can drop in to see the design and progress. As a ‘make location’ we at Wageningen will be working together with Veenendaal on a section of the whole tapestry which will in the end up in the 35m tapestry.

The monumental tapestry is not just an artwork; it is a collective memory, a fabric of stories and histories that connects us to our ancestors and to each other. Working together to create a piece that reflects the rich, diverse and complex history of the society and province of Gelderland. The tapestry will be a tangible evidence of collaboration and collective creativity.

Join us in this unique opportunity to immortalise the Gelderland story of the shared colonial slavery past in this tapestry. A sense of collective shared past is an important foundation for working towards a better future.
